Teaching Statement

The core component of my teaching philosophy is open discussion with the aim of an increased consciousness of oneself relative to the world. I create spaces for students to share their understandings and misunderstandings freely, as different backgrounds lead to a diversity of perspectives that can only contribute to our collective knowledge. I make it clear that formulating questions, rather than seeking definitive answers, is often more valuable in the process of critical thinking. The act of questioning is compatible with the enterprise of continuously learning more about oneself, of shaping and re-shaping one’s identity. My goal is for students to walk out of my classroom with an increased awareness of themselves and the skills to think critically about their environments as they become socially engaged adults.
